What to know before you order

Where the food is, the sink has to be

Riverside County Environmental Health expects hand-washing within reach of any temporary food operation. If you are running a taco cart at a block party off Brockton or a beer garden downtown, this is the piece that gets asked about.

Placed to the side, never in the doorway

We stand the station off to one side of the bank of units, on the same firm ground, where there is room to line without blocking a door. It is a small detail that decides whether people actually use it.

Stocked, not just delivered

Fresh water, soap and towels are filled at delivery and topped up at every service call. For hot Inland Empire weekends we will size the water so it lasts the day rather than running dry by mid-afternoon.

Portable Hand-Wash Station - common questions

Do I need a hand-wash station for my event?

If food is being prepared or served, plan on it - the county asks for hand-washing near temporary food service. For construction, one station alongside the units is good practice and is often written into the site rules by the general contractor.

How many people does one station serve?

Two at a time, and comfortably a hundred or so people over an event. Two stations at opposite ends of a site beat one big line in the middle every time.

Does it need a water or power hookup?

No. Fresh water is carried in the station's own tank and the pumps are foot operated. That is what makes it work at the trailheads on Mount Rubidoux and out at the Hidden Valley sites where there is nothing to plug into.

What is in it when it arrives?

Full fresh-water tanks, soap in both dispensers and paper towels stocked, with a waste tank underneath that we pump on the service run.

Can it go next to a deluxe unit?

It can, though the deluxe unit already has a sink inside. Most people pair the station with standard and ADA units, where there is no sink on board.

Do you rent them on their own?

Yes - catering companies and food-truck operators around Riverside rent stations on their own regularly, with no restrooms in the order at all.
